Whyte Classification System

System for classifying (steam) locomotive wheel arrangements, primarily used in the USA. In Europe, the VDEV Classification System is used.

Most of the locomotive types also had names associated with them - some examples:

  • 4-8-8-4: Big Boy
  • 4-6-6-4: Challenger
  • 4-8-4: Northern
  • 4-6-2: Pacific
  • 2-8-2: Mikado
  • 2-8-0: Consolidation
  • 4-4-0: American
